The purpose of composite fillings are simple - fixing cavities. Instead of using unsightly silver amalgam, this restorative treatment uses white resin to fill cavities. This results in an almost invisible repair and helps your smile to stay white and bright.

Composite filling FAQs

Still have questions about composite fillings?

The experts at Yorkshire Dental Suite Leeds answer the queries we receive most.

If well cared for, composite fillings can last up to 8 years. Your dentist will check the condition of your filling at every check-up and advise if a replacement is needed.

While they are very stain resistant, we recommend attending regular hygiene visits to keep them looking their best, especially if you smoke or consume a lot of pigmented foods and drinks.

No. The Yorkshire Dental Suite team uses a local anaesthetic to first numb the area, before carefully and gently attending to the tooth. In fact, most patients are surprised by how quick and easy the composite filling procedure is.

Yes, once the numbness wears off - this typically takes 1 - 3 hours. Rest assured, your dentist will give you full aftercare guidance before you leave.

Absolutely. Many of our patients choose to replace their amalgam fillings for aesthetic reasons. Your dentist will assess your existing fillings and let you know what's possible.

In honour of full transparency, there are some downsides of composite fillings to be aware of before going ahead with your treatment.

  • Composite fillings are more expensive than silver fillings
  • As the composite is applied in layers, the process can take a little longer to complete
  • Your filling may discolour over time

Usually, the NHS provides silver fillings. However, if deemed clinically necessary, they may offer a composite filling instead. An example of this is if you need a filling on a front tooth.
