What are composite veneers & how do they work
Composite veneers are made from dental grade resin that is applied to the surface of your existing teeth. This cosmetically fixes any imperfections and give you a beautiful straight white smile. In a typical treatment we do not need to modify your teeth. This means that there is no need for drilling or injections as the entire procedure is painless. You can have a full set of veneers in a few hours giving you a beautiful new straight smile that lasts up to 10 years. Yorkshire Dental Suite developed Nanofill Composite Bonding®, our own formula of resin that achieves a more durable and aesthetically pleasing result compared to traditional composite treatments. Types of veneers
There are 3 different types of veneers available on the UK market.
Direct composite veneers
Our preferred treatment, direct composite veneers use resin that is directly applied to a tooth. The resin is hand -painted on to each tooth, sculpted to achieve the desired result, cured to make it hard, and then hand-finished. This makes it indistinguishable from a natural tooth. This process is painless, takes a few hours and lasts up to 10 years.
Indirect composite veneers
Indirect veneers are made in a lab using a scan of your mouth before being fitted to your teeth in your second appointment.
Porcelain veneers
An alternative to low-cost composite veneers, porcelain veneers replace resin with porcelain to deliver a more hard-wearing and longer lasting finish. This type of veneer requires the permanent modification of your teeth to allow space for the veneers to be attached. This treatment can take several months and requires multiple appointments.
Composite veneers Vs porcelain veneers
Choosing between composite and porcelain treatments can be confusing. To help you we have explained the difference below:
Composite veneers
- Cheaper
- Faster: A full treatment takes a few hours
- Pain free: No injections or drilling
- Non-destructive: Does not modify your tooth
Porcelain veneers
- Harder wearing: Less prone to chipping
- Last longer: More durable
- Stay whiter: More stain resistant
Composite veneers Vs composite bonding
Composite veneers cosmetically fix the front of your teeth giving you a straight white smile. Composite bonding, also known as edge bonding, fixes gaps, chips and other imperfections. In many cases, both treatments are used together to give you the smile you deserve.
Composite veneers procedure
Completed in a few hours, the procedure for getting composite veneers is pain free and straight forwards:
- Consultation: Your teeth should be straight and have no existing issues. If you have crooked teeth, consider clear aligners, a removable and wire free alternative to orthodontic braces. Cavities should be treated and a hygienist consulted if you have gum disease or other issues.
- Preparation: Your tooth is cleaned and prepared using a special solution that helps resin bond to your tooth.
- Application: Nanofill resin is applied to your tooth by hand as our dentist sculpts your new smile. Cracks, chips, uneven teeth, discolouration and large gaps disappear as your teeth are resurfaced.
- Curing: The resin is set using ultraviolet light to deliver a hard-wearing finish.
- Finishing: Your hardened composite will be finished by hand, creating natural gaps, a straight bite and natural looking surface detail.
How long do composite veneers last?
With proper care, composite veneers can last between 5-10 years. To achieve this, you should make sure:
- Have regular check-ups and hygienist appointments.
- Brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to your gums and using floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth.
- Avoid food and drink that can stain your bonding and rinse with water as you eat.
- Avoid hard, sticky and crunchy foods which can chip your composite.

We match the colour of your veneers to the colour of your natural teeth. As a result, we recommend having a whitening treatment before undertaking composite. Teeth whitening costs from £395. If required, hygienist appointments cost from £150, and help treat gum disease or similar issues prior to your treatment. If required aligners cost from £2,750, and help fix any teeth alignment issues that would prevent veneers form being successful.
How to care for your composite veneers
For the most part, taking care of composite veneers is similar to maintaining good oral hygiene.
- Brush your teeth twice a day and after meals using a good quality fluoride toothpaste and a soft tooth brush. Make sure you brush your gums and use interdental brushes or floss to remove food and bacteria from between your teeth.
- Visit your hygienist regularly.
- Avoid food and drink known to stain composite material including tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco, vape, tomato based sauces e.g. tomato soup, curry and bolognaise sauce. If you have any of the above rinse your mouth with water to help reduce stains.
- Limit acidic foods which can affect your enamel and discolour your veneers.
- Avoid eating hard, crunchy or sticky foods that can damage your veneers. If your veneers chip or break, please consult your dentist.
- Ask your dentist about touching up your veneers. Minor damage and discolouration can often be treated to help preserve your new smile.

What is Nanofill composite resin?

Nanofill Composite Bonding® is a specially formulated resin that is exclusive to Yorkshire Dental Suite clinics. Nanofill elevates traditional composite veneer treatments, providing a more hard wearing and finer, more natural looking and stain resistant finish to your treatment.
Can you whiten composite veneers?
No composite veneers cannot be whitened using teeth whitening treatments. This is because composite resin is not porous and does not stain the same way as a natural tooth. If your veneers are stained and need whitening, they can potentially be re-buffed to remove any surface discolouration. Please contact your dentist to discuss your options.
Do my teeth need to be prepared?
Yes, composite veneers require teeth to be prepared in several ways before treatment can be started.
- Any gum disease should be treated before having composite.
- Your teeth will be cleaned.
- A special agent will be applied to aid adhesion.
- The surface of your tooth will be roughened to aid adhesion.
Do composite veneers stain?

To preserve the whiteness of your veneers please make sure you follow all hygiene recommendations from your dentist and avoid food and drinks that are known to discolour composite. If your composite is discoloured contact is to discuss Nanofill Composite Bonding® the more stain resistant and hard-wearing alternative to traditional composites.
Do composite veneers hurt?
The process of getting composite veneers is done without any pain. When you initially get your new veneers you may experience an odd sensation as your mouth adjusts to these changes. This sensation will go over time as you become accustomed to your new teeth. If you experience soreness behind your lips, or around your gums please contact your dentists to discuss your treatment options.
If I grind my teeth, can I get composite veneers?
Wear and tear on your teeth caused by grinding is a great reason to get composite veneers. If you are worried about bruxism (Grinding teeth) wearing down your veneers then you may want to consider a nighttime guard to help protect your dental work.
Can I get composite veneers if I have missing teeth?
You cannot get a full set of composite veneers if you have missing teeth. The bonding treatment requires a tooth to be successful. Instead, consider a partial veneer or individual tooth bonding in addition to tooth replacement treatments such as dental implants or bridges.
Are composite veneers safe?
Composite veneers are one of the safest dental treatments available. This type of veneer does not require any permanent alteration to your tooth, no surgery, drilling or sedation, and is completed with no pain in just a few hours. The treatment is fully reversible and can be undone to reveal your preserved, natural teeth underneath.
Can I get composite veneers on finance?
Yes, Yorkshire Dental Suite has multiple finance options available for composite veneers.
Are composite veneers strong?
Composite veneers made from traditional dental resin are reasonably strong but do require some restraint. Avoid hard, crunchy and sticky foods, and biting down on pens, pencils and other non-food items which can cause chips and cracks. Nanofill by Yorkshire Dental Suite does provide a more hard-wearing veneer however we do suggest following the guidance as with traditional composite. If durability is your main concern then consider porcelain veneers which are significantly more hard wearing and stain resistant, however they are more expensive and require permanently altering your underlying teeth.
How are composite veneers bonded to teeth?
Veneers are attached using a dental adhesive. In the case of composite veneers the teeth are roughened and treated to help the hand applied composite resin to bond with the surface of each tooth.
Are composite veneers reversible?
In most cases yes, the composite veneer treatment is completely reversible and does not damage the teeth underneath. Please do not attempt to remove your veneers. Instead, speak to your dentist about your concerns.
Composite veneers after 5 years
After wearing composite veneers for 5 years you will notice some difference from when they were originally created. The composite will be a few shades darker. This is normal and caused by the food and drink consumed over the past 5 years. You will likely also notice some wear. If you are concerned about your composite work and would like to discuss getting it refreshed or replaced please contact your dentist.
