Dental implants case study
Angela's story
Angela struggled with confidence after having uncomfortable dentures and wanted a better solution. She chose full mouth dental implants to transform her smile. As you can see she’s overjoyed with the result.

What are dental implants?
It starts with a titanium screwlike post attached to the jawbone
Implants replace the root of a tooth with a threaded post attached to your jawbone. This is topped with a crown or bridge, replacing damaged, decaying, discoloured, broken and missing teeth with a new smile.
From a single tooth implant that fills a gap in your smile, bridges that span larger gaps and All-on-4 implants that replace a full arch (jaw) of teeth, to full mouth implants that give you a completely new smile, the experts at Yorkshire Dental Suite can reclaim your lost confidence.
Treatment takes around 7 hours, is painless with sedation and lasts 20+ years with care.

Am I eligible for dental implants?
Aged 18 to 80+, implants can transform your smile
To be immediately eligible for dental implants you should have healthy teeth and gums, ideally with a check up from the past 3-6 months. If you have dentures, you are most likely eligible straight away.
Issues including periodontal disease (gum disease), gingivitis, bone loss and receding gums will need to have treatment before implants can be started. This is an addition, and will increase your total treatment time.

Benefits of dental implants
Are dental implants right for me?
Pros: A perfect straight white smile improves your confidence. Without pain, you can bite and chew your food, enjoying steak, sweetcorn, apples, strawberries and your favourite dishes once again. Your speech can improve and you will no longer be self-conscious when smiling and laughing. Having a full set of teeth will also reduce lines around your mouth, fill out your cheeks and potentially make you look younger. Implants won’t decay and do not get cavities, lasting up to 20+ years if you look after them.
Cons: Implants cannot be whitened and will discolour naturally over time. It is uncommon, but implants can fail. You will need to have them removed, wait four months while your mouth heals, and try again. While they are more hardwearing than natural teeth they’re not indestructible, so avoid biting onto anything hard.

Types of dental implants
What are my options?
There are several types of dental implants, including:
- Single tooth implant: A threaded titanium post topped with a porcelain crown.
- Implant bridge: Rows of teeth replaced with a bridge supported by implants.
- Denture implants: Removable snap-in dentures that clip into your mouth.
- All-on-4 dental implants: A full bridge supported by four implants.
- Full mouth dental implants: Both jaws replaced with bridges of teeth.

Check your eligibility
Check your eligibility with a consultation at your local Yorkshire Dental Suite clinic and have an oral examination, CBCT scans and X-rays worth over £200.
A painless procedure
You are sedated, making the treatment painless. Teeth are removed, implants secured and a temporary bridge fit, giving you new teeth the same day.
Your new smile is ready
In 3 to 4 months implants fuse with the jawbone. Your final hand-painted bridges are then fit, giving you a new smile that lasts up to 20+ years.

An implant is a screwlike titanium post that is inserted into the jawbone. It replaces a natural tooth root and provides a secure footing.
Implants typically are attached to an abutment which protrudes up and out of the gum, allowing a crown or bridge to be attached.
Both implants and abutments are made from grade 5 titanium. This helps to prevent the body from rejecting the implant and increases the chance of success.
The visible part of a dental implant treatment is the crown or bridge. Crowns sit above the gumline, bridges extend down over the gum to give a seamless aesthetic.
Crowns are made from either layered porcelain or zirconia, a ceramic-coated metal. Both are hand finished and coloured to look just like perfect natural teeth and gums.
Bridges are made from PPMA, a BPA-free acrylic supported by a titanium bar or zirconia.
The titanium implant post, abutments, crowns and zirconia bridges last up to 20+ years with care. PPMA bridges have a shorter lifespan, lasting up to 10 years with care. Crowns and bridges can stain, causing them to dull naturally over time.
If you experience damage, failure or need your implants or bridges renewing, the process can be repeated with the addition of an interim healing period when your gums and jawbone are left to revert back to a normal state.
There are no private or public services offering free dental implant treatments. The NHS do not offer implants unless there is a direct medical need e.g. due to cancer.
If you are considering dental implants the only route is through a private dentist such as Yorkshire Dental Suite. From budget options including denture implants and finance that helps you spread the cost over time, we can help you keep costs as low as possible.
The procedure is painless. Local anaesthetic numbs the mouth and gums preventing any pain.
For patients with phobias, anxiety and pain concerns we offer a wide range of sedation options, designed to keep you comfortable, pain free and relaxed..
- Anaesthetic or sedation makes your mouth and gums numb
- Teeth are removed
- An incision is made through the gum to expose the jawbone
- A pilot hole is drilled into the jawbone
- A grade 5 titanium implant is screwed into the jawbone
- An abutment is added
- The gum is stitched into place
- A crown or bridge is placed onto the abutment
- A retaining screw passes through the prosthetic to secure it to the abutment
A single dental implant costs £2,800.
All-on-4 is the name given to a single bridge containing 10-14 teeth supported by four dental implants.
Yes. The procedure is well established, materials are tested and the manufacturing process refined.
Implant treatments have high success rate of 97.79%*. Issues are typically caused by the patient's lifestyle post-treatment e.g. continuing to smoke or vape which causes gum disease, bone loss and peri-implantitis; a lack of dental hygiene; biting onto hard objects and foods; and failure to attend check-ups and hygiene appointments.
Contact your local GP to discuss help stopping smoking.

No. Gum disease increases the risk of implant failure.
You will be assessed during the in-clinic consultation and any gum disease flagged for treatment. This can include hygiene appointments, antibiotics and gum grafts in the most severe of cases.
This will increase your treatment costs and timeline.
A single tooth implant procedure can be completed in a few hours. A full mouth dental implant procedure can take around 7 hours (including breaks).
This excludes osseointegration, which typically takes 3 - 4 months before your final LTP (long-term prosthetic) may be designed, manufactured fit.
The three basic types of dental implant are:
- Endosteal: Implants secured into the jawbone
- Subperiosteal: Attached to a plate on top of the jawbone (an outdated method which is not recommended)
- Pterygo-maxillary Implants: Used in cases with bone loss, these extend beyond the jawbone to attach to other areas of the skull. See zygomatic and pterygoid implants
The price of dental implants is only expensive if you consider the up-front cost.
The treatment itself requires investment in expensive dental equipment and materials. In addition to the dentist and nurse there are a host of other professionals involved behind the scenes who analyse scans, model the bridges, creating treatment plans and hand-painting crowns and bridges. The seven hour procedure is just one element of a process that spans several months.
After years of being unable to eat your favourite foods, smile, laugh and speak clearly, the value and life-changing benefits of having full mouth dental implants is incalculable. Implants can even fill out your face, reducing lines around the mouth and sunken cheeks to give you a more youthful appearance.
With this in mind its clear to see that dental implants are not expensive, but instead represent a world of possibilities.
Implants are made from grade 5 titanium. This is widely used in medical procedures including hip, knee and orthopaedic implants. It is strong and corrosion resistant.
An implantologist is a dentist that has undergone additional training to specialise in dental implant treatments which are not covered by standard dental training.
To heal faster you should:
- Stop smoking and vaping, which causes gum disease
- Treat pain with over-the-counter pain medication
- Eat soft foods for the fist week after treatment
- Slowly introduce former foods
- Rinse with clean water 3-4 times per day
- Take any prescribed antibiotics
- Avoid acidic foods
- Use a water flosser to clean around the edge of the crown or bridge
- Brush the crown or bridge with a soft toothbrush
- Attend regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments
- Avoid biting onto hard or crunchy or sticky foods
A bone graft is one of several treatments designed to treat or work-around bone loss.
Bone loss is caused by illness or due to the long-term absence of a tooth's root which would otherwise stimulate bone growth in the jaw.
A bone graft uses donor material to strengthen areas intended to support a dental implant. This material can be grafted from the patient's own body, use animal bone or artificial bone. Please ask your dentist for details. The new material is placed, allowing it to fuse with your jaw until it becomes an integral part of your skeleton.
In some circumstances bone grafts are impractical. In these cases, a sinus lift or use of a pterygo-maxillary implant is suggested.
