The cheapest option is a single arch treatment using clear aligners. This costs £1,495. The most expensive option is a complex dual arch treatment costing £3,995 using either aligners, lingual or ceramic braces.

After treatment you will need to wear a retainer at night while you sleep. These cost £150 per arch.

For many cleaning dental retainers is just a matter of rinsing them under clean cold water before use.

If retainers are stained or you are worried about bacterial build up, clean using a denture sterilizing tablet and for an extra deep clean, add an ultrasonic cleaner.

Dentists recommend brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste before cleaning between teeth and over the gum line using a water flosser.

Standard braces operate by pulling teeth into alignment. Brackets are attached to each tooth and a wire linked between them. Adding different tension to wires between teeth helps pull them into alignment.

Clear aligners and headgear push instead of pulling teeth into alignment. Aligners use an offset mould of your teeth to strategically add pressure, moving teeth within the gum. Headgear uses external tension to pull teeth into alignment.

Using "appliances" including braces and clear aligners, orthodontics correct the position of individual teeth, addressing overbite and overjet, underbite, crossbite, open bite, crowding, and gap teeth amongst others. An orthodontist is a GDC-registered dentist that has had additional training and certification to provide orthodontic treatments. All orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists.

NHS retainers are provided free of charge at the end of a treatment. Replacement retainers cost £99.60 for an arch, or £199.20 for a full set. You will have to have had an NHS treatment to qualify.

Orthodontia is another name for orthodontics, a set of treatments designed to fix dental bite and alignment issues.

Adult braces are not available as an NHS treatment. As a result, you will need to seek a private dentist to fix your orthodontic issues.

The good news is that adult braces at Yorkshire Dental Suite are all uniformly priced at £2,495 for mild cases and £3,995 for complex cases (finance available).

This means you can have your choice of fixed metal braces, ceramic braces with tooth-coloured brackets and frosted wires, or hidden lingual braces attached to the tongue-facing side of your teeth.

At Yorkshire Dental Suite orthodontic retainers cost £150 per arch. Replacement retainers are charged at the same amount.

To qualify for braces you should be referred to an orthodontist by your dentist, or simply contact us to arrange a consultation.

1. Visit the orthodontist to have scans, X-rays and a treatment plan created
2. On your second visit you will have your braces attached. Brackets are cemented to each tooth and a wire set at tension between them
3. Return throughout your treatment to monitor your progress and have your braces adjusted
4. Once straight teeth have been achieved you will need to wear a retainer at night while you sleep

After the initial fit and each tensioning appointment your teeth and jaw will ache. Take over-the-counter pain medication to manage this discomfort until your mouth has adjusted.

A retainer holds your teeth in place after an orthodontic treatment. It prevents regression where teeth move back out of alignment. You will need to wear retainers for 2 years after your treatment, after which the gums will have set and your teeth are fixed in place.

If you experience regression you may need to repeat your braces or aligner treatment but on a mild level.

The length of time you need to wear braces relates directly to the complexity of your case.

For mild cases, teeth can be corrected in as little as 4-6 months. For complex and severe cases treatment can take many years.

Your individual treatment plan will outline any relevant timescales before treatment begins. It is not unusual for the treatment plan to be adjusted mid-treatment to account for how your teeth are responding to treatment. Your orthodontist will highlight any changes during each consultation.

The easiest way to know if you need braces is to be referred to an orthodontist by your dentist. Alternatively, if you have bite issues including:

• Crowding: Teeth twisting or overlapping
• Gaps: Spaces between teeth
• Overbite and overjet: Top teeth protruding out over the top of your bottom teeth
• Underbite: Lower teeth protruding out over your upper teeth
• Open bite: A gap between the front upper and lower teeth
• Crossbite: A combination of over and underbite that affects jaw alignment

Braces are typically suggested for kids aged 13 upwards who have bite issues. This is around the time when all adult teeth have developed. Treatment can take many years, so having treatment early helps resolve issues before adolescence.

Braces are available from NHS orthodontists. The choice of appliance is limited to fixed wired braces. More discreet options including clear aligners, ceramic braces and lingual options are only available from private clinics.
