Getting braces as an adult
A commitment to your confidence and oral health
In the UK, demand for adult orthodontics has soared. The British Orthodontic Society states that one third of all new teeth straightening patients are now over the age of 18, with GDC-registered specialists achieving a 95% success rate.
When you opt to have braces as an adult, the treatment approach is vastly different to a child receiving orthodontics. This is because your jawbone has finished growing, and you may have existing dental work that needs to be taken into consideration. This includes implants, crowns, veneers and more.
At Yorkshire Dental Suite, our most commonly requested treatments are the invisible lingual braces and almost invisible clear aligners, which are popular thanks to their discreet design.

Do I need adult braces?
The long-term solution to misaligned teeth and bites
If you have crooked teeth, gaps or an uneven bite then you will be eligible for adult braces, however eligibility may vary based on the condition of your teeth, if you have gaps, bone loss or damage.
Alongside the aesthetic benefits of a straight, aligned smile, adult braces are also an investment in your oral health. Complementary to other dental procedures, the treatment’s main advantages include:
- Improved periodontal health: Plaque is less likely to become trapped in straighter teeth, as they are much easier to clean. This significantly lowers the chance of gum recession, gum disease and bone loss.
- Bite alignment: Correcting an overbite or underbite can alleviate TMJ (Jaw Joint) disorders and chronic headaches, helping to improve your quality of life.
- Preparation for implants: Our orthodontists often use braces to create the perfect space for a dental implant or bridge.

Adult braces process
Achieving straight, uniform teeth has never been easier
Combining the experience of our orthodontists with state-of-the-art technology, your smile is in the best possible hands.

Orthodontic consultation
We use a combination of 3D intraoral scanners, X-rays and CT scanners to create a high-definition digital map of your mouth. This allows us to show you a digital simulation of your finished smile before we even begin.

Custom fabrication
Whether it’s a series of clear aligners or your choice of braces, your appliance is engineered specifically for your tooth anatomy. Everything is built carefully in Yorkshire Dental Suite’s dedicated laboratory.

Monitoring your progress
The required number of visits to the dentist changes based on the treatment you are having. We provide appointments that fit around your schedule, for example, during your lunch break or before work begins.

Smile maintenance
Adult teeth have a high ‘relapse’ memory, meaning that your teeth can shift back out of alignment once treatment is over. Wear a retainer (permanent or removable) to ensure your results last a lifetime.

Private braces for adults
Invest in yourself today
Adult braces are classed as a cosmetic treatment. This means they are not available from the NHS, which only provides treatment if a patient’s case is deemed a medical necessity. You will need to seek the assistance of a private dentist instead, where the price of your teeth straightening changes based on the complexity of your case and the treatment you choose. If you wish to spread the cost of adult braces over time, enquire about our finance options.

Why adult braces are different
Life-changing treatments meticulously tailored to suit each patient
As you age, the bone becomes denser and the blood supply is slightly less robust, increasing the risk of problems such as root resorption (the shortening of the tooth root) while you straighten your teeth.
To ensure a safe experience, the orthodontists at Yorkshire Dental Suite use low-force techniques. This simply consists of applying light, constant pressure to move the teeth. Specialist orthodontists also use Cephalometric Analysis (side on X-rays) to ensure that moving your teeth won’t negatively impact your airway or facial profile.

Adult braces FAQs
Still have questions about adult braces?
To determine if adult braces are right for you, it is vital that you are as informed as possible about the treatment. We have answered our most commonly received questions - if your query isn’t addressed, do not hesitate to contact us.
Absolutely. Adult braces allow you to finally speak, smile and chew with confidence, while simultaneously supporting your long-term oral health. Many of our patients wish they had done it sooner.
Bonjela can provide a temporary soothing effect to painful gums. It also helps to minimise inflammation.
Also known as overjet, buck teeth is a common dental condition in which the upper teeth abnormally protrude over the bottom teeth.
Orthodontic treatment for adults may begin at any age, as long as your teeth and gums are in a generally healthy condition. This means that if you are over the age of 18 and have an overbite, it can be fixed.
There are numerous factors that may affect your eligibility for braces. If any of the following applies to you, please discuss this with your dentist during your consultation.
- You have gum disease (hygienist appointments available)
- You have severe bone loss (bone grafts available)
- You cannot secure finance
Teeth shifting after braces is normal. This is a very slow process that usually occurs over several years, but can prevented if you have something to hold your teeth in place, such as a retainer.
Adults generally cannot claim braces on the NHS, as it is deemed a cosmetic treatment. Only those under the age of 18 who are classed as having a clinical need for braces can secure funding. In very rare cases, it may be approved if needed for health reasons.
The answer to this changes based on numerous factors, including the severity of your misalignment. The treatment time for adult braces can range from six months to two years. If your case is very complex, it may take even longer.
Twin blocks are only effective in growing patients. This means that, if you are an adult and your jawbone has finished developing, it will not likely work.
Braces are not the only treatment used to straighten teeth. Consult with your dentist if any of the following options are suitable.
- Nanofill Composite Bonding®: Suitable for patients with very mild crowding or overlapping, this popular cosmetic treatment disguises malocclusions with a bright white resin.
- Porcelain veneers: Thin porcelain shells are bonded to the surface of the tooth, instantly straightening its appearance without the need for any movement.
