Getting kids braces in the UK
A headstart on a lifetime of confident smiles
For under 18s, when there is a clinical need for braces free treatment is available from the NHS. If your child has mild malocclusions, or wants orthodontics for aesthetic reasons, you will need to seek assistance from a private dental practice like Yorkshire Dental Suite.
Treatment typically starts between the ages of 11 - 13. The most common orthodontic procedure for children is fixed braces, which uses brackets and wires to pull your teeth into alignment, however private dentists offer more discreet, but as effective and safe options.
Types of fixed braces for children
A treatment for every unique smile
If you are an NHS patient, metal ‘train-track’ fixed braces are your only option. However, if you go to a private clinic, you have a number of alternative, more discreet treatments to choose from.
Lingual braces
Also known as invisible or hidden braces, this orthodontic appliance attaches to the back of the teeth. It is the most discreet way to align your child's smile.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces have the same wires and brackets as its metal counterpart. However, the brackets are tooth-coloured, making them hard to see, and more aesthetically pleasing.
Clear aligners
Looking for an alternative to fixed braces? This popular treatment, which can be removed to eat, drink, exercise and clean teeth, uses a series of transparent mouth trays to move teeth.

Does my child need fixed braces?
State-of-the-art technology identifies premature alignment issues
The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) recommends an initial orthodontic screening at the age of 7. This appointment helps to identify any ‘interceptive’ needs. However, orthodontists will usually wait for the arrival of adult teeth before attaching fixed braces.
Kids orthodontist
Your child’s smile is in the best possible care
Orthodontists are dentists who have undergone an extra three years of full-time training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of teeth and jaw irregularities. Using fixed braces, these specialists can correct any kind of misalignment, from mild crowding and gaps to complex bite corrections.

Living with braces
Orthodontics that perfectly adapt to school, socialising and home life
Fixed braces do not disrupt your child’s everyday life. As they are attached to the teeth, there is no risk of the braces getting lost, or your child forgetting to wear them.
There are drawbacks to be aware of, the first being diet restrictions. Sticky, hard and crunchy foods need to be avoided to prevent damage to your braces. Try to limit access to fizzy drinks too, as these can contribute to discolouration.
A good oral hygiene routine is also essential to prevent gum disease and decalcification, a condition which causes irreversible white spots on your teeth. Follow the specific cleaning instructions set out by your dentist.

Fixed braces for children FAQs
Still have questions about this treatment?
We have answered the most common questions we receive about child orthodontics. If your query isn’t addressed, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Your dentist will identify your child’s eligibility using the IOTN scale. If braces are deemed as a medical necessity (Grade 4 or 5), you can claim free treatment on the NHS.
There are pros and cons to each type of retainer. Whilst equally effective, a removable appliance may be better for upper teeth, as your bottom teeth may accidentally bite (and damage) a fixed retainer. It is arguably more hygienic too as it can be removed to clean your teeth. However, if you forget to wear your retainer, your teeth will move out of alignment once more.
There is no risk of forgetting to wear fixed retainers, as they are permanently fitted in place. They sit on the back of your teeth, making them invisible to the eye, and do not impact your speech. Something else to note is that this type of retainer requires extra effort when cleaning and flossing teeth, and the wire may break off or become damaged. This will then need to be replaced at an extra cost.
Free, if you are under the age of 18 and identified as having a clinical need for braces. If you do not fit this criteria, a private dental clinic is your only option. Prices vary from £2,250 to £5,995 at Yorkshire Dental Suite.
The answer to this depends on the severity of your child’s case, and if any additional treatments are needed. Treatment times may vary from 6 - 12+ months.
Tooth movement can cause temporary discomfort, particularly after having the wires tightened by your orthodontist. This may be managed with your typical over-the-counter pain medication or brace wax. If the discomfort persists however, please contact your orthodontist.
