Sometimes braces need a little help to straighten your teeth. That’s where elastics come in – working with your braces, these rubber bands apply additional force in order to aid tooth movement and jaw alignment.

What are elastics for braces and what do they do?

Orthodontic elastics are bands that hook onto the brackets of your braces. Typically made from rubber, these special appliances help to correct misaligned teeth and bites. They are effective in treating:

  • Open bite: The top and bottom teeth do not meet when your jaws are closed.
  • Overbite: The top teeth overlap the bottom teeth.
  • Underbite: The bottom teeth overlap the top teeth.
  • Overjet: Teeth protrude out from the jaw. Often called ‘buck teeth’.
  • Crossbite: A combination of over and underbite across multiple teeth.
  • Gap teeth: Teeth are spaced unevenly, causing visible spaces.
  • Crowding: Teeth are pushed together, making them appear crooked.

You may be wondering, what teeth do you put the rubber bands on? Orthodontic elastics can be placed anywhere in the mouth. Based on your bite and treatment goals, the pattern in which they are placed will change.

  1. Class II elastics: Used for overbites.
  2. Class III elastics: Used for underbites.
  3. Box elastics: Used for gaps and open bites.
  4. Triangle elastics: Used to close bites and improve how the teeth come together.

How long do you wear elastics on braces?

This timeframe is determined by your orthodontist, but ranges anywhere from weeks to months. Brace elastics should be worn 24/7, only being removed when eating and brushing your teeth. Attach a new set of bands every time your previous ones are taken out.

Something important to note is that, if you do not wear the rubber bands for the designated time, it can reset your progress. Your orthodontist will show you how to remove and re-attach your elastics.

How painful are elastics on braces?

For some patients, elastics may cause some discomfort. This is often the result of the added pressure bands place on the mouth, or if the rubber material scratches the inside of your cheeks.

To treat this discomfort, you are able to take your usual over-the-counter pain medication. A saltwater rinse can also help to soothe irritation. However, if this discomfort persists, please contact your dental clinic for advice.

Will I need to wear elastics on my braces?

Not everyone is required to wear elastics on braces, for example, if your jaw is already aligned or your case is mild. If any of the following applies, your orthodontist may recommend elastics:

  • To correct a misaligned bite
  • To move specific teeth into position
  • To close or reduce gaps between teeth
  • To move teeth in a particular direction
  • To fine-tune the position of your teeth towards the end of treatment
