One of the most common questions our Nanofill™ patients ask is, can I eat and drink normally after composite bonding? The answer is yes, but we recommend easing your way back in to your normal diet while you get used to your new bite. This is especially the case in the first 48 hours. During this timeframe, dentists recommend sticking to soft foods only, like yoghurt and mashed potatoes.
Food timeline – what to eat and when
Unsure as to what you can and can’t eat immediately after your dental treatment? Here is some simple guidance, put together by the experts at Yorkshire Dental Suite.
48 hours
Try to stick to soft foods only in the first 48 hours post-procedure. This is because the dental resin is still setting. Cheesy jacket potatoes and hearty soups are great meal options.
7 days
During this period, you are still getting used to your new bite and figuring out what you are comfortable eating. You can start to re-introduce harder foods into your diet (with caution). Fish and pasta bakes are great meal options.
1 month onwards
By this point, you should be able to eat and drink as normal. There are foods we still generally recommend avoiding - let’s go into more detail.
Foods to avoid after composite bonding
To minimise the risk of damaging your bonding, we recommend reducing your intake of the following where possible:
- Nuts
- Hard sweets
- Toffee
- Ice cubes
- Chewing gum
- Popcorn kernels
- Sticky foods, such as caramel and taffy
The aforementioned options have the ability to chip or crack the bonding material. Additionally, try to avoid food and drinks that stain - this is due to the fact that composite bonding cannot be whitened.
- Tea
- Coffee
- Red wine
- Tomato-based sauces
- Colourful spices, e.g. turmeric
- Berries
- Cola
If you have any concerns about making changes to your diet, please consult with your dietician or doctor.
Foods you can eat after composite bonding
The good news is that, with composite bonding, you do not need to change your diet that much. There are still plenty of suitable food options, including:
- Smoothies
- Eggs
- Yoghurt
- Pasta
- Mashed potatoes
- Soups and broths
- Cheese
- Meat
- Banana
- Cucumber
Composite bonding aftercare tips
Nanofill Composite Bonding®, our exclusive take on dental bonding, is designed to be very durable and hard wearing. With proper care, the treatment lasts 5 - 8 years. However, it is not indestructible, and may chip or discolour over time. There are many things you can do to keep your new smile looking fresh. Oral hygiene is key, so remember to brush twice a day and floss regularly. Be careful when flossing though, as you may pick off some of the bonding. Attend two routine check-ups with your dentist every year to make sure your mouth is healthy. In addition to this, we recommend avoiding smoking and vaping as much as possible. These habits are recognised to cause discolouration, as well as a host of oral health issues.
Conclusion: By limiting your intake of sticky, crunchy, hard and staining food and drinks, you are able to keep your composite bonding in top condition. Want a brighter, straighter-looking smile in a matter of hours? Enquire today about our extremely popular Nanofill Composite Bonding® treatment.
