What are All-on-6 dental implants?

Restores confidence and your quality of life

All-on-6 does exactly what the title suggests. Using six implants, a full set of teeth are secured to your upper or lower jaw. This minimises the amount of surgery and recovery time required, and means you will leave Yorkshire Dental Suite Leeds with a same-day smile transformation. The life-changing treatment is often suggested if you have bone loss, and more implants are required to successfully attach your new teeth.

All-on-6 dental implants FAQs

Have questions? We're here to answer them

We have covered the most common queries we receive about All-on-6 dental implants. If you have a question that is not shown here, do not hesitate to call or email. We will do our utmost to give you impartial and accurate answers.

As the names suggest, the difference is how many implants are used to secure your new teeth in place. All-on-4 uses four dental implants, while All-on-6 uses six. The latter is typically recommended to patients with bone loss or lower jaw replacements.

Yes. Depending on the level of bone loss you have, your dentist may suggest having a bone graft prior to your procedure, or recommend zygomatic and pterygoid implants. These special implants bypass the jawbone and anchor to other areas around the mouth.

No. Patients with gum disease will need treatment before they can get All-on-6 dental implants. This typically includes a number of appointments with a hygienist, who will deliver a deep clean of the mouth to remove plaque and bacteria.

Ahead of your appointment, it is important to stay well hydrated and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. This helps to prevent further bone loss, encourages improved healing and minimises the risk of dental implant complications.

It is not necessary to replace each tooth individually when replacing a full jaw of teeth. All-on-6 attaches up to 14 teeth using just six implants, rather than 14 single ones. This offers many benefits, including lower costs, less surgery and a quicker recovery time.

The procedure takes seven hours, four of which are for the surgery itself, while the other three are spent prepping you for the procedure and building your temporary teeth. If you include the initial consultation and recovery time, the entire process usually takes 3 - 4 months.

We understand that the procedure can seem intimidating. That's why we provide a number of sedation options to not only make the treatment pain free, but also help you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. While you recover, you may experience bruising, swelling and discomfort. Follow the aftercare instructions set out by your dentist to manage these potential side effects.

To clean All-on-6 dental implants, follow a typical dental hygiene routine:

  1. During meals drink plenty of water and swill food debris from your teeth
  2. Brush twice a day, ideally after meal times
  3. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and high quality fluoride toothpaste
  4. Clean the bridge, removing debris from around each tooth
  5. Pay particular care to the gumline, brushing along the edge of the bridge to remove debris and bacteria
  6. Floss between teeth (consider a water-flosser)
  7. Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash

In honour of full transparency, we have highlighted the potential downsides of this treatment. Speak to your dentist if any of these issues are a concern.

  • High cost: All-on-6 implants are one of the most expensive dental treatments, but the benefits are worth the high price tag
  • Non reversible: You cannot get your natural teeth back
  • Recovery time: It can take up to four months for your gums to stop being sore and fully heal
  • Maintenance: You should stop smoking and maintain a good oral hygiene routine to prevent gum disease and other issues
  • Cannot be whitened: Over time your implants will discolour, especially if you consume lots of staining food and drinks
  • Not indestructible: While they are extremely durable, you should still be cautious with your diet and everyday habits
  • Risk of implant failure: Dental implants can fail and become loose

All-on-6 dental implants last 30+ years if well cared for. If your implants are old and you think they are in need of renewal, please contact your dentist to discuss your treatment options. These can range from new implants and bridges to snap on overdentures or regular dentures.
