What are all-on-4 dental implants?

This treatment replaces a natural tooth root with a titanium implant that is fused to the jawbone. In an all-on-4 procedure, 4 implants are placed across the jaw to secure a bridge containing 10 to 14 teeth. All-on-4 implants are typically used to replace the upper teeth when they are loose, missing or damaged.

With all-on-4 you can:

  • Transform your teeth in a painless procedure completed the same day
  • Smile and laugh with confidence
  • Bite and chew, enjoying steak and other foods
  • Improve your speach
  • Reduce the signs of ageing (cheeks and mouth)
  • Enjoy up to 20+ years of trouble free smiles

Yorkshire Dental Suite Birmingham has highly skilled GDC registered dentists, implantologists and oral surgeons. We specialise in dental implant treatments and have helped 1000s of patients to smile, bite and chew confidently once again.

Who is suitable for all-on-4 dental implants?

Dental implants are available for ages 18 to 80+ where the skeleton has fully grown.

If a dentist has recommend replacing the top set of teeth with dentures then you will likely be eligible for all-on-4 dental implants.

For others there should be more un healthy, damaged or missing teeth than healthy on your top set. Issues including gum disease (periodontitis), gingivitis, receding gums and in some cases bone loss, should be treated before implantation can be started. This adds to the overall treatment cost and can increase timescales. You will receive a thorough examination, x-rays and CBCT scans during your consultation to reveal any underlying issues.

Candidates for implants should stop smoking or vaping as this is a major cause of gum disease and can significantly increase the risk of implant failure.

Contact Yorkshire Dental Suite Birmingham to book your consultation for just £95 and check your eligibility. Each consultation is great value and includes over £200 worth of x-rays, CCBCT scans, digital imaging and a consultation with a GDC registered dentist.

Types of all-on-4 implants

There are two basic types of all-on-4 dental implants.

Fixed full arch dental implants

Combining dental implants and a full arch bridge that is permanently fixed in place, this type of all-on-4 treatment gives you a natural looking smile that lasts up to 20+ years.

All-on-4 denture implants

Also called snap-in dentures, this treatment combines the flexibility of a removable denture, with the security of implants that are fused to the jawbone.

Materials

  • Grade 5 titanium: Used in implant posts, abutments and bars (PPMA only) to add strength and minimise the chances of rejection.
  • Acrylic: Used in dentures and PPMA bridges. Also used in temporary bridges that are in place for 3-4 months while the implants fuse with the jawbone.
  • Zirconia: A ceramic coated metal bridge that is hand painted to look natural. Zirconia is more durable than natural teeth and is used to create your permanent bridge.
  • Porcelain: Layered translucent ceramic used in single implants, dental crowns and premium implant bridges.

Bridges

A significant factor in treatment cost, the choice of bridge can impact the ability to bite and chew, affect longevity and aftercare.

  • Temporary acrylic bridge: Fit the same day as your teeth removal and implant attachment.
  • Snap-on dentures: Hand painted acrylic dentures that you can snap on and off for cleaning. Not as durable as zirconia.
  • PPMA bridges: An affordable titanium reinforced bridge that is hand painted to look natural. Not as durable as zirconia.
  • Zirconia bridge: A durable ceramic coated bridge containing teeth that is hand painted.
  • Zirconia with individually placed crowns: The gold standard, combining hard wearing zirconia and porcelain crowns.

  5. Recovery: You will visit the clinic a few times while you recover. This helps us to keep an eye on your progress, address any issues, create scans of your final implant positions so we can create your final bridge.
  6. Final fit: Your final bridges are designed from a 3D scan and fabricated in our dedicated dental laboratory. This allows us to maintain control of the entire process and ensures the highest standards of materials, design and finish.
  7. Aftercare: The treatment is complete. You now need to care for your all-on-4 dental implants following the guidance provided by your dentist. Make sure you attend regular check-ups and hygiene appointments to maintain your smile.

The all-on-4 dental implant procedure

We call the all-on-4 dental implants procedure Teeth in a Day. This is designed to give you a brand new smile the same day as your teeth are extracted.

  1. You are welcomed by our reception team and guided to a waiting area. Make sure you are accompanied as it is not safe to drive directly after the procedure.
  2. The Treatment coordinator will meet you and direct you a the state of the art treatment room.
  3. You will again meet your dentist who will talk through the procedure and answer any questions.
  4. You will be sedated or have local anaesthetic as previously agreed. This makes the entire procedure painless. You will remain awake but relaxed allowing time to fly by while we do our work.
  5. Treatments can be lengthy so you will have breaks throughout.
  6. Teeth are quickly and painlessly removed.
  7. The dentist makes incisions through your gum to expose the jawbone.
  8. A pilot hole is drilled into the bone
  9. The grade 5 titanium implant screw is inserted.
  10. An abutment is attached to the implant.
  11. The gum is stitched.
  12. A temporary bridge is 3D printed on-site and fit the same day - we call this teeth in a day.
  13. You return home for 3-4 months allowing the implant to fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration.

How long do all-on-4 dental implants last?

Zirconia all-on-4 dental implants last up to 20+ years with care. Due to the materials used, PPMA bridges typically last up to 10+ years before needing renewal.

To make your implants last as long as possible follow the basic rules

  • Avoid food and drink that can stain your implants: e.g. tomato based sauces, red wine, berry based juices.
  • Avoid biting onto anything hard: e.g. nuts, pen lids, finger nails, refrigerated chocolate.
  • Avoid sticky foods: e.g. toffee and caramel
  • Brush and floss using a water flosser twice a day
  • Attend regular check-ups and hygiene appointments
  • Report loose bridges to your dentist

When renewing your implants the procedure is the same as when you first had them.

All-on-4 dental implant pain management

During the initial procedure pain is managed with your choice of sedation or local anaesthetic. This makes the day pain free and keeps you relaxed during the surgery.

Swelling and bruising peaks around 2 days after the procedure. Treat any pain with your choice of over-the-counter pain medication.

Brush using a soft bristled brush and use a water flosser to prevent gums from becoming sore. If gum pain continues consult your dentist.

If you are concerned about pain or have phobias book a consultation at Yorkshire Dental Suite Birmingham. Our dentists will outline your options and ensure you have a stress free experience.

Eating after all-on-4 dental implants

As with most dental treatments the types of food you can eat reflect the stages of your recovery.

First days after surgery

With your temporary bridges in place, gums stitched and osseointegration underway it is best to stick to soft food for the days after your surgery. Avoid any acidic foods which may irritate. Soup, smoothies, mashed potato, rice and pasta dishes with sauces can be the easiest to manage during these early states.

After one week

You can start adding some texture. Consider stews and casseroles, cottage pie, hotpot, lasagne etc.

With your final teeth

You should be able to eat normally once the final bridges have been fit. Many people enjoy eating steak, biting into apples, strawberries. It is important to avoid biting into hard and crunchy foods to maintain your teeth.

FAQs

Should I get all-on-4 in Turkey?

While the idea of getting low cost all-on-4 dental implants while on holiday in Turkey sounds inviting the risk cannot be denied. A BBC documentary titled Turkey Teeth: Bargain Smiles or Big Mistake exposed the lack of ethics with half of dentists surveyed recommending unnecessary, incorrect or invasive treatments. Unlike UK dentists that are regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC) and Care Quality Commission (CQC), dentists in Turkey have no official oversight. What's more, if you encounter issues UK dentists will not offer treatments as this means accepting responsibility for the original dentists work.

In some cases Yorkshire Dental Suite Birmingham can help with failed all-on-4 dental implants created in Turkey. Book a consultation to discuss your case.

What are the cheapest all-on-4 dental implants in the UK?

There are many ways to get the cheapest quote for all-on-4 dental implants. This largely relies on the condition of your teeth and gums and the choice of bridges.

Remove remediation

Keep your costs low by having a check up with your NHS dentists. Ask them to treat any gum disease (periodontitis), gingivitis and for an appointment with a hygienist before you attend your consultation at Yorkshire Dental Suite Birmingham.

Simplify sedation

Instead of having expensive IV sedation opt for the cheaper local anaesthetic to keep costs down.

Pick bargain bridges

Choose implant retained dentures of PPMA bridges instead of the more premium zirconia. This does mean your bridges will have a more limited lifespan and wont be as durable but can help keep costs down while giving you a beautiful smile.

Bypass bone loss

Instead of an expensive bone graft, bone loss on the upper jaw can in some situations be bypassed with a sinus lift, pterygoid implants or zygomatic implants.

Flexible finance

Spread the cost of treatment with a wide range of finance options. Contact us to discuss your situation.

What is the best material for all-on-4 implants?

The best material for all-on-4 dental implants depends on your budget. In all cases the implant screws and abutments should be made from the highest grade medical titanium. This decreases the chance of rejection. Yorkshire Dental Suite Birmingham uses Grade 5 titanium to deliver the best possible results.

  • Most affordable: Acrylic snap-in implant retained dentures
  • Budget option: PPMA acrylic bridges supported by a titanium bar
  • Most popular: Zirconia bridges
  • Premium option: Zirconia bridges with individually placed zirconia or porcelain crowns.

All-on-4 dental implants bruising

As with all surgeries, patients may experience some bruising on the face. Pain peaks around the second day. Bruising can remain for several days. Treat any symptoms with your choice of over the counter pain medication.

Can I get all-on-4 dental implants on the NHS

NHS dentists are only able to offer all-on-4 dental implants if there is a direct medical as the result of an illness, accident or injury. Treatment is band 3, costing £319.10. NHS implants are typically made from acrylic and designed to last up to 5 years before being replaced by a denture.

This means for most patients private implant treatments are the only option.

Compared to private all-on-4 dental implants, NHS treatments represent the lower end materials, technologies and patient experience.

All-on-4 vs all-on-6 dental implants

Dentists recommend all-on-6 dental implants when patients have signs of bone loss, but not enough to warrant a bone graft or alternatives. The main difference is the use of an extra 2 implants to secure the bridge to the

jaw.

What are the potential problems with all-on-4 dental implants?

All-on-4 is a popular and well practiced procedure used to replace damaged, decaying and missing teeth with a new bridge and a beautiful smile. There are no inherent problems specific to all-on-4 treatments compared to a standard full mouth dental implant procedure. Common issues typically occur due to lifestyle choices which include:

  • Implant failure: Gum disease caused by smoking or a lack of oral hygiene can cause implants to become lose and fail. This may require antibiotics, multiple hygiene appointments and several surgeries to fix.
  • Damaged bridges: Biting onto hard, sticky or crunchy foods can damage the bridge or cause it to become dethatched form your implants
  • Discolouration: Eating and drinking foods known to stain can cause bridges to become dull. This can not be whitened using a conventional teeth whitening toothpaste or gel treatments.

How do I know I am getting the best all-on-4 dental implants?

To get the best all-on-4 dental implants you need to be confident in the following:

  1. Pioneers in all-on-4 - Our technicians were integral to the development of the first all-on-4 implant procedure.
  2. Highly experienced GDC registered dentists and oral surgeons that specialise in dental implants
  3. State of the art dental implant centres that use the latest materials, techniques and tools
  4. In-house dental laboratory responsible for materials and manufacture of implants and bridges
  5. On-site fabrication of custom made temporary bridges
  6. A dedicated treatment coordinator that is with you throughout your journey
  7. Expert advice and support after your implants have been fit

Can I get all-on-4 dental implants with gum disease?

No. Any gum disease will need to be treated prior to a dental implant surgery. A strong healthy gum is essential to the osseointegration process and critical to helping to prevent implant failure. Treating gum disease typically means a few hygiene appointments and potentially a course of antibiotics. This will increase your costs and extend your treatment time. You should also stop smoking which is a major cause of gum disease. Speak to your local GP about help quitting.
