Veneers for Teeth

What To Eat After Porcelain Veneers

Transform the shape, size and colour of your teeth with beautiful porcelain veneers that are built to last. Contact Yorkshire Dental Suite today.

Porcelain veneers last up to 15 years (or even longer) if well cared for. However, what you eat on a day-to-day basis significantly impacts their durability. To enjoy the full lifespan of the treatment, some short and long-term diet tweaks are recommended.

What to eat 3 hours post-procedure

To avoid accidentally scalding yourself, or even biting your cheek or tongue, we recommend that you do not eat for the first three hours following your porcelain veneers procedure. This is because the anaesthesia is still wearing off. Once your mouth has regained feeling, proceed with caution.

What to eat 72 hours post-procedure

You will still be adjusting to your new bite in the first 72 hours following your porcelain veneers fitting. You may also experience some temporary sensitivity. With this in mind, try to stick to a soft food diet only – this helps to minimise discomfort caused by chewing, while also allowing your mouth to get used to its new bite.

What to eat when wearing your temporary veneers

At Yorkshire Dental Suite, you typically wear your temporary veneers for 2 – 4 weeks. They are not as strong as your permanent veneers as they are made from acrylic, rather than porcelain, so extra care should be taken while eating to avoid damaging the veneer. Here are the foods we recommend eating (and avoiding) during this time.

Suitable

  • Yoghurt
  • Mashed potato
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soft bread
  • Pasta
  • Cheese
  • Steamed or boiled vegetables
  • Shredded meat
  • Bananas
  • Soups and broths

Not suitable

  • Ice
  • Hard sweets
  • Nuts
  • Chewing gum
  • Popcorn

What to eat after fitting your permanent veneers

No numbing is required when your permanent veneers are attached. This means you can eat straight away. However, we still recommend sticking to soft foods only for 24 hours while your veneers set.

What about long-term maintenance then? Whilst strong, porcelain veneers are susceptible to chips, cracks and stains, just like your natural teeth. The experts at Yorkshire Dental Suite advise making small diet modifications (if medically able) to enjoy the full lifespan of the treatment.

For example, pigmented food and drinks like coffee, curries and berries will stain your veneers, and they cannot be whitened. Additionally, hard, chewy foods may damage your veneers, or even cause them to dislodge.
