Wisdom teeth, if not grown properly, can cause further dental problems, including damage to surrounding teeth, inflamed/infected gum tissue, jaw damage (cyst growth), cavities, alignment problems, or sinus issues.

One of the most popular uses of sedation is for wisdom teeth extractions. Before the procedure one of our surgeons will carry out a pre-sedation assessment in order to make sure all is ok before having the treatment done under sedation.
The only thing you should feel is a slight scratch as the anesthetic is being administered. Following that you will feel no pain just pressure and slight pushing as one of our surgeons takes the wisdom tooth out.
Once the tooth is removed, there is a hole in the bone called a socket. A blood clot forms in that area to protect the bone and nerves underneath.
If that clot becomes dislodged or aggravated, it will cause the bone and nerve to be exposed to air, fluids and food, causing an infection – or a dry socket. You will know you have this as you will feel pain radiating up to the ear as well as a bad taste in your mouth and possibly bad breath.
Don’t worry however, dry socket is quite common following a wisdom tooth extraction so all you need to do is get in touch with us and we will bring you in to put a special medicine in the socket to ease the pain and get rid of the dry socket.
We usually recommend resting the next day following the extraction in case of any swelling or bruising however if you need to go to work then it is fine to do so as long as you take it easy.
You shouldn’t experience any pain during the actual extraction as your mouth will be numbed from the anaesthetic we provide. If you start to feel any discomfort, your surgeon will be able to administer more anaesthetic to you.
We realise that dental procedures can be quite stressful for some people, and if you have a fear of going to the dentist, we offer IV sedation. Speak to your dentist about this during your initial consultation.
If left untreated, your wisdom will have a negative effect on your other teeth, particularly your second molars. By pressing up against your other teeth, an infection may develop. Having crowded teeth may cause the enamel to degrade too.
For the most part, having your wisdom teeth taken out is quite straightforward.
There are very occasionally slight complications associated with the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. On rare occasions, a condition known as dry socket can occur.
