Different types of dental sedation

Feel relaxed in the chair with your choice of sedation

01

Minimal sedation

A mild sedative, often take orally or inhaled, to help the patient relax while remaining awake and alert.

02

Moderate sedation

A deeper state of relaxation. You may feel drowsy or even fall asleep, but you will still be able to respond to your dentist's prompts.

03

Deep sedation

Patients are on the edge of consciousness and may not respond to prompts or remember much of the procedure.

04

Inhaled sedation

A mask is placed over your face and you inhale nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) to make you feel very relaxed.

05

Oral sedation

A pill is taken around an hour before your treatment. You will be drowsy during your treatment, but still awake.

06

Intravenous IV sedation

You receive a sedative through an IV straight into a vein. It’s an approach that helps the dentist to have more precise control over your level of unconsciousness.

Dental sedation FAQs

Still have questions about sedation dentistry?

The experts at Yorkshire Dental Suite Leeds answer the questions we receive most.

Absolutely. Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who have a fear or anxiety about dental procedures, as it allows them to receive the treatment they need without fear.

IV sedation will sedate you to a deeper level in a quick, safe and predictable way. Oral sedation is useful - however, sedative drugs administered in this way may take longer to become effective. This can mean that the right levels of sedation might not be achieved when the drug actually sets in.

No, not at all. Depending on the level of sedation you've received, you may still be fully conscious, but you won't feel any pain.

Most of our clients experience no discomfort during their dental treatment and feel surprisingly good afterwards. Something to note is that you may feel a slight pinch as the needle is inserted, but this typically lasts just a few seconds. We can provide a numbing cream to minimise the sensation if this is a concern to you.

Yes. We recognise that a young patient can feel as much, if not more, anxiety than an adult surrounding dental treatment. If your child requests sedation, we'll make sure that the levels they receive are completely safe.

There are some risks of dental sedation to be aware of prior to your treatment. These risks will be discussed with you by your dentist:

  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Bruising (depending on the sedation method you choose)
  • Amnesia
  • Vomiting (rare cases)

Please follow the instructions provided by your dentist to ensure a safe experience.

The answer to this changes based on the type of sedation you have. Usually, inhaled sedation wears off around 30 minutes later, whereas the effects of IV sedation may be felt for up to 24 hours post-procedure. For your safety, we do not advise driving home after sedation. Please ensure you have a travel companion.

During your consultation and on the day of your treatment, make your dentist aware if you are taking medication or experiencing ongoing health problems. They will determine if you are suitable for sedation.

At Yorkshire Dental Suite Leeds, we choose not to put patients to sleep while operating. General anaesthesia is more dangerous than local anaesthesia, and we also require your co-operation during the procedure. For example, your dentist may ask you to move your head.
