Is my child eligible for orthodontics?
Tailored orthodontics for ages 7 - 13
The primary goals of children’s orthodontics are habit correction (such as thumb sucking), space maintenance and jaw expansion. If your child has these issues and is aged between 7 and 13, they are eligible for orthodontics.
Phase 1 orthodontics, the name given to treatment at this age, focuses on correcting issues before they turn into more severe problems. By guiding jaw growth before it finishes, specialists can often avoid extractions or surgery – research suggests that when Phase 1 is utilised there is a 40% reduction in the need for permanent tooth extractions.

Orthodontic assessment by age 7
We help young smiles grow the right way
The British Orthodontic Society states that 7 is the optimal age for your first visit to the orthodontist. Why? At this age, there is a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth in the mouth. The first permanent molars have typically erupted, establishing the ‘back-to-front’ relationship of your child’s bite. This allows our orthodontists to detect issues like crossbites or narrow arches before it becomes a more severe issue.
Yorkshire Dental Suite has a digital advantage in orthodontics. We use next-generation AI Outcome Simulators, a type of software that harnesses 3D digital scans to predict how your child’s jaw will grow over the next five years. It also allows us to detect issues before they appear, such as 'stuck' adult teeth. This saves your child from invasive surgery later in life.

NHS vs private orthodontics for kids
Private clinics offer treatment variety and shorter wait times
Orthodontics can be claimed on the NHS, but eligibility is determined by the IOTN scale, a system that identifies if your child’s needs are a clinical necessity. If they do not meet the requirements, you will need to seek assistance from a private dental clinic.
NHS vs private orthodontics for kids
Let's compare the advantages and disadvantages of private and NHS orthodontics for your child's smile.
| Feature | NHS orthodontics | Private orthodontics |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | IOTN grade 4-5 only (severe/medical) | Open to all (prevention and aesthetics) |
| Start age | Usually 12+ (once all adult teeth are in) | Age 7+ (early intervention) |
| Wait times | 12 - 36 months (national average) | 0 - Immediate start |
| Appliances | Metal fixed braces only | Clear aligners, ceramic braces, palate expanders, lingual braces, headgear |
| Monitoring | Visits to a practice every 6 - 8 weeks | Treatment dependent |
Orthodontics phase 1 vs phase 2
Different phases require different treatments
A great way to explain phase 1 orthodontics is by thinking of your child’s teeth as foundations. You wouldn’t build a house on a narrow plot - you would expand the plot first. Phase 1 treatment, which usually occurs between the ages of 7 and 13, focuses on ensuring there is enough room for the adult teeth to come through, rather than perfectly straight teeth. There are many treatments available to choose from.
So what is phase 2? This starts around the age of 11, when most of your child’s permanent teeth have come through, and typically ends at 15. This phase focuses on improving the function, health and aesthetics of your smile using braces or aligners. It builds upon the progress of phase 1 and straightens teeth.
Crossbite correction

Arch expansion

Your most common questions, answered
If your query is not addressed, do not hesitate to contact us. We will help in every way possible.
Not necessarily. However, it makes phase 2 (teenage braces) much shorter and less invasive. In addition to this, it often prevents the need for pulling out healthy adult teeth to make space in the mouth.
Aside from some slight aching, not typically. Early appliances like ‘space maintainers’ or ‘expanders’ use very light pressure to get the desired results, and children are recognised to adapt much faster than adults or teenagers.
Very rarely. On average, the NHS waits until all adult teeth are present, which is usually around the age of 12 years old. If you want your child to have treatment earlier, this is almost always a private service.
