What are dental implants?

Teeth in a Day™

Dental implants are a permanent replacement for missing or damaged teeth.

  1. You are sedated making the process pain-free
  2. Your teeth are removed, and your gums prepared
  3. A grade 5 titanium implant is attached to your jaw
  4. An abutment is attached. This extends out of your gums
  5. A crown, temporary bridge or temporary arch is attached
  6. It can take several months for your gums to heal
  7. Your final bridge or arch is test fitted and any adjustments made
  8. Your final arch is fitted giving you a beautiful new smile

If your dentist has suggested having dentures then you will likely be eligible for dental implants.

Other signs are missing, loose or damaged teeth however you will need more damage or missing teeth than healthy to be eligible. Our dentists avoid removing healthy teeth whenever possible.

Implants require healthy gums to be effective. If you have loose teeth then you will require hygiene appointments to restore your gums before implants can be started.

Receding gums may require a gum graft.

Implants require healthy jawbones to be effective. The standard solution for this is a bone graft, which uses your own bone or donor material to rebuild your jawbone.

Any additional treatments required will be discussed and fully costed during your consultation before implants can start.

Yorkshire Dental Suite offer four types of standard dental implant:

  • Toronto style bridge: Our Diamond implants use individually positioned crowns on a Toronto style bridge to achieve the most lifelike and durable result
  • Zirconia bridges: Our Platinum implants use a zirconia bridge that is hand finished to deliver a life like result
  • PPMA bridges: Our Gold implants use a titanium supported acrylic bridge that is ideal for the budget conscious
  • Porcelain implant: Used when replacing a single tooth, these implants use a porcelain coated zirconia prosthetic attached to a titanium implant. This fills gaps in your smile left by individual teeth.

For bone loss on your upper jaw we also supply Zygomatic and Pterygoid implants that replace the need for a bone graft, speeding up your treatment and recovery.

Common names for implant treatments

When researching dental implants you may encounter other names for these treatments.

  • Full mouth dental implants: The most common type of implant surgery is for full mouth dental implants. This replaces all of your teeth with arches filled with prosthetics. Treatment takes around 7 hours and lasts up to 20 years depending on the type of bridges being used.
  • All-on-4 (or some other number) dental implants: Typically used to replace your upper or lower set of teeth, all-on-X implants use the number of implants specified to secure the bridge to your jaw. The higher the number, the more secure the bridge will be. Higher numbers are also used when mild bone loss is found.
  • Cantilever bridges: When securing 2 teeth on a single implant a cantilever bridge is used. This allows multiple teeth to be supported by a smaller number of implants.
  • Partial bridge: This is the name given to a bridge containing 2 or more teeth used to full a gap made by a damaged or lost row of teeth.

Implants are made up from several component parts.

  • Titanium implant: The threaded post that is secured into your jawbone
  • Abutment: Screws into your implant, passing through the gum to allow a crown or bridge to be attached
  • Crown: A porcelain coated zirconia crown that is used to replace a single tooth
  • Bridge: Containing between 2 and 10 teeth, a bridge is designed to fit over your gum and look natural when you smile.
  • Screw: Attaches through your crown or bridge into the abutment to hold it in place
  • Cement: dental cement can be used to reinforce attachment and cover screw holes to achieve a natural looking result

It all starts when you contact Yorkshire Dental Suite. Whether you have clicked request a call back, or booked your appointment, a member of our triage team will call you to discuss your case, outline costs and answer any questions you have around your treatment. Don't forget to discuss any phobias, concerns and sedation to keep you calm and relaxed throughout your experience.

Consultation

Make an appointment to visit your nearest Yorkshire Dental Suite clinic where you will receive a warm welcome from our front of house staff and your dedicated Treatment Coordinator.

Visit a treatment room for scans, photographs and an oral examination. This can include X-rays and CT-scans to check you are eligible for treatment.

Your dentist will create a treatment plan specific to you and outline the steps, costs and timeline of your treatment.

Your Treatment Coordinator can help organise finance and book you in for your treatment.

Remedial work

If you have gum disease, loose teeth, bone loss or receding gums you will need additional treatments to restore your oral health. This reduces the failure rate of implants to make sure they last as long as possible. This will add to the cost and timescales of your treatment and will be outlined in your treatment plan.

Pre-treatment consultation

On the day of your treatment you will again sit with your dentist to discuss the staps being taken. They will again answer any questions to make sure you are confident and ready to go ahead.

Sedation

Having discussed sedation previously your treatment will begin. Sedation keeps you relaxed and pain-free.

Extraction

Any remaining teeth are quickly removed.

Implant attachment

Your jawbone is exposed and implants and abutments attached.

Temporary bridge or crown attachment

While your implants knit to your jawbone they can move position. This is why instead of having your final bridges or crown positioned on-the-day, we attach a temporary acrylic prosthetic. This gives you new teeth the same day. Wear these temporary teeth for the next few months.

Trial smile

Towards the end of your recovery period, you will have further scans. These are used to create a prototype of your finished bridge or crown which is trial fit giving you a preview of your finished smile.

LTP (Long Term Prosthetic)

Hand finished in our laboratory, your finished crown or bridges replace your temporary prosthetic.

Your dentist will discuss care and provide guidance to help you maintain your new teeth.

A single tooth implant costs £2,800 rising to £49,995 for our diamond package full mouth dental restoration.

Dental implant bridge from £2,500

These partial bridges replace rows of teeth with a bridge supported by one or more implants.

All-on-4 dental implants from £11,995

Costing from £11,995 to £29,995, all-on-4 implants replace a full upper or lower set of teeth supported by a minimum of 4 dental implants.

Full mouth dental implants from £19,995

Costing between £19,995 to £49,995, this treatment replaces all of your damaged or missing teeth with 2 arches containing 10 teeth each.

Discuss sedation with your dentist to prevent pain and discomfort during the implant procedure.

Are you put to sleep for dental implants?

No. Instead you are put into a dream like state. This allows you to be mobile and respond to instructions from your dentist. This makes your treatment to be fast and efficient.

Dental Sedation for nervous and phobic patients

We specialise in nervous and phobic patients, helping you to get the essential treatment you need to transform your life with dental implants.

Please discuss any concerns with our triage team before you attend your first appointment.

How to relieve pain from dental implants?

As you recover it is natural to feel some pain or discomfort. This will pass as your healing progresses. Your dentist will prescribe medication to help speed up your recovery and manage pain.

What is the worst part of a dental implant?

Day 2 after your temporary crown or bridge has been fitted is reported to be the most inconvenient. This is because bruising and clotting has fully developed. This will stop after a few days.

You may be tempted to bite into hard, sticky or crunchy food while your gums heal. This can damage your temporary crown or bridgework and cause irritation.
