How to get braces for teens
A lifetime of beautiful smiles await
Typically, orthodontic treatment for teenagers start between the ages of 11 and 14, once your permanent teeth have fully come through. This is the ideal time for orthodontics as our expert team can use braces to guide your jaw growth. The need for invasive dental surgery in adulthood is potentially minimised as a result.
Teens in the UK may claim free braces on the NHS. However, a dentist must identify that your teeth straightening treatment is a clinical necessity. You can also choose to go private for your orthodontics, where you will have more treatment choices including ceramic or lingual braces, and clear aligners.

Should my teen get braces on the NHS?
NHS vs private: Which should I choose?
The NHS uses a scale called the IOTN (Index Of Orthodontic Treatment Need) to determine who can claim free braces. Only patients identified as having a clinical need for braces, grades 4 - 5 on the scale, can receive treatment.
This means that those with mild-to-moderate misalignments will need to seek private dental care. While this comes with a higher cost, there are other benefits to take into consideration.
At a private clinic, you will have more orthodontic appliances to choose from, such as ceramic braces and aligners, while the NHS only provides wired metal braces. Additionally, the NHS waiting list is 6 - 12 months on average, while private practices offer next-day appointments.
Teen life with braces
Smile, laugh, speak and live freely without hiding your teeth
Braces don’t have to disrupt your everyday routine. Navigate school life and enjoy all your favourite activities while straightening your teeth. Depending on the type of treatment you choose, you can even enjoy food without restriction, and the number of visits to the orthodontist required is minimal. At the end of your treatment, enjoy a beautiful, selfie-ready smile you can’t wait to show off.
Why specialist orthodontic care matters for growing smiles
Targeted care that works with growth, not against it
An orthodontist is a specialist that has completed three years of additional full-time training specifically in tooth movement and growth. These dental professionals tailor your treatment to suit your specific jaw growth and needs.
Here at Yorkshire Dental Suite, we work with some of the very best orthodontists in the industry, each registered with the GDC (General Dental Council) to ensure a safe and effective treatment.
