The different types of dental implants
There are many different types of dental implants. Your dentist will talk you through all of your options and help you decide which procedure is the most suitable.
Type of implantHow does it work?
Replaces an individual tooth. The gap is filled with a titanium implant and a porcelain crown.
A single implant can hold a bridge containing 2 or more adjacent teeth. Multiple tooth implant bridges contain 3 or more teeth. It is similar to a partial denture.
The minimum number of implants required for successful upper jaw teeth replacement. Uses 4 implants to secure 10 to 14 teeth to your upper jaw.
Suitable for when more implants are required to make your arch secure (for example, patients with low bone density). Uses 6 implants to secure 10 teeth to your upper or lower jaw.
Also known as Teeth in a day or Smile in a day, full mouth implants include fitting a full arch of teeth to the upper and/or lower jaw.
Pterygoid implants are used when upper bone density is low, and implants need to be secured through your jaw and anchored to the medial pterygoid plate behind.
Zygomatic implants are used when low bone density prevents standard implants from being inserted into your upper jawbone. It is inserted diagonally along the sinus wall into your cheekbone.
What are dental implants made of? The rundown
Thanks to their strength, high success rate and durability, the most popular choice of material for a dental implant is titanium and zirconia. We use grade 5 titanium in our treatments – however, dentists may use the following as an alternative:
- Zirconia dental implants: A great option for patients with a metal allergy. It has a natural white colour that blends seamlessly with your natural teeth.
- Ceramic dental implants: This type of implant is, again, a very natural choice. It is resistant to corrosion, but not as durable as zirconia or titanium.
- Titanium implants: The gold standard in implantology – it’s lightweight in the mouth and has exceptional stability and longevity.
- Polymer implants: A light and easy-to-manipulate material that is very aesthetically pleasing. It is not as strong as the aforementioned materials.
- Alternative metals: Often metals such as gold and stainless steel are used to create a dental implant. Not commonly used as they do not have as high as a success rate as titanium.
How much does a dental implant cost in the UK?
The cost of a dental implant varies greatly. This is due to many factors, such as the materials used and the number of teeth being replaced. Prior to dental implant treatment, all patients must also have a consultation (£95). This allows your dentist to check for any problems that may affect the viability of your procedure, for example gum disease and low bone density.

If you need any additional treatments prior to having your dental implants, such as a bone graft, gum graft or sinus lift, this will increase your overall spending. For some patients, such procedures are compulsory. We offer finance options to those who wish to spread the price of their treatments.
Dental implant procedure
Wondering about what to expect on the day of the procedure itself? First of all, you will be given the sedation of your choice, so the treatment is completely pain free, before any necessary teeth are extracted. Your dentist makes an incision in the gum and screws a grade 5 titanium implant into your jawbone. What follows is an abutment and a temporary porcelain crown. This whole process is done in one day! Your gum then needs several months to heal before your final teeth are fitted. Once it has, you will return to the clinic and have your permanent teeth attached. The procedure is now complete.
Benefits of dental implants
Dental implants may seem intimidating to some patients, but the benefits the treatment provides are life changing.
