Considering dental implants but apprehensive about what the treatment involves? Allow us to ease your mind. Yorkshire Dental Suite are experts in the field, carrying out your dental implant procedure in just one appointment (commonly referred to as Teeth in a day or same day dental implants). It may seem intimidating, but the benefits it provides are life-changing.
Before Your Treatment
The dental implant process starts with a consultation. Here, your teeth and jaw are assessed to ensure that you are suitable for the procedure. If it is identified that you have gum disease or need additional treatments such as a bone graft or a gum graft, we will talk you through the next steps required, alongside our finance options.
The Dental Implant Procedure & Recovery
So, how do dental implants work? At the start of the appointment, you will be given the sedation of your choice, making the procedure pain-free. Teeth are removed (if required) and an incision is made in your gum. A grade 5 titanium implant is screwed into your jawbone, before an abutment is fitted on top. If you are having an implant bridge, for example All on 4, multiple implants and abutments will be used. Your temporary teeth are then fitted. This is all done in one day. You may find yourself asking, how long does a dental implant take to heal? Well, your gum needs several months to recover before your final teeth are fitted. During this time, we will be meticulously crafting your crown or bridge to perfection. You will then come back for your last appointment and have your permanent teeth attached.
Aftercare: The Dos & Don’ts
Knowing how to look after your dental implants post-procedure is paramount. If you do not care for yourself properly, the risk of infection and failure of the implant increases significantly. Something to take into consideration is that every patient’s healing journey is different. Follow the specific aftercare instructions and timeframes set out by your dentist for a smooth recovery. Here are some general aftercare tips to keep in mind for the first two weeks after your dental implant surgery. One of the most important things you can do is take it easy!
DO:
- Stick to a soft, nutritious diet for the first two weeks following your procedure.
- If needed, manage any pain with your usual over-the-counter medication or antibiotics (only if prescribed).
- Maintain good oral hygiene, being careful not to disturb the dental implant site for one week after the treatment.
- Reduce swelling by applying ice packs or frozen peas to your outer jaw.
- After 24 hours, use a mouthwash containing chlorhexidine. Follow the instructions on the label.
DO NOT:
- Smoke or drink alcohol.
- Drink or eat anything with dairy.
- Partake in strenuous activities.
- Use straws – this may disturb the blood clot.
- Touch your implant with your tongue or fingers.
