How Healthy are your gums?

FACT: Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults, but did you know it can be prevented?

Therefore, it’s vital to have regular consultations with your dentist and to have appointments for a thorough clean and tartar removal with your hygienist.

During our in-depth consultation, your dentist may sometimes take x-rays. This not only checks for decay between the teeth, but also lets your dentist assess the health of your gums and shows how healthy the bone supporting your teeth is. If there are any problems they can be detected and treated early, making sure you keep your teeth for longer and maintain a healthy mouth.

So, you might be interested to know the differences between healthy and unhealthy gums:

Healthy Gums will:
• Be pink in colour
• Feel firm to the touch

Healthy gums do not bleed when you brush them!

Unhealthy Gums will:
• Be red in colour
• Look or feel swollen and puffy
• Cause bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth

Unhealthy gums do bleed when you brush them! – If your gums are bleeding DO NOT stop brushing them.

How can I help?

Using floss and interdental brushes daily, alongside your usual brushing at least twice a day can help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Regular visits to your Dentist and Hygienist also make sure you stay healthy.
If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, don’t ignore them! Unless they are treated they will not get better and you could end up with irreversible damage.
