A fissure sealant is a protective coating applied to the biting surfaces of a tooth if it is slightly worn down. This prevents the food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.
Treatment is usually straightforward and painless. The procedure requires the tooth to be thoroughly cleaned, prepared and dried before a liquid sealant is applied and set to harden. Sealants can last for many years.
Original silver fillings, otherwise known as amalgam fillings, are mercury based fillings mixed with silver alloy. This material is very durable and strong but they are unsightly when smiling and therefore white fillings are becoming much more popular.
White fillings are an adhesive resin based ceramic and are totally mercury free. They are also very durable and can last for a long time. The material used is available in many different shades so they can match the natural colour of your teeth.
Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth. If your gums bleed when you brush them or are red and swollen then this is a sign of gum disease, also known as gingivitis.
If gingivitis is left untreated the gums can become infected. This is periodontitis, a serious condition which could result in the loss of a tooth. The entire area surrounding the tooth is affected so it is vital to keep your mouth healthy and attend regular hygiene appointments or dental check-ups.
Root canal therapy or Endodontics is a dental procedure that treats severely decayed or broken teeth. When the pulp tissue and nerve endings deep inside the tooth have been infected, the endodontic procedure involves removing the decayed tissue and thoroughly cleaning out the root canals. Once the root canals are sealed, the rest of the tooth is prepared for restoration and a new crown is then fitted.
Successful treatment helps to save the tooth from extraction. If left untreated an abscess can occur leaving the patient in severe pain and the possibility of extraction.
Dentures help replace missing teeth without the need for any tooth tissue drilling. The appliance can be made from acrylic or chrome materials depending on the type of denture you are looking for. Full dentures replace all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw and fit snugly against the gums, whilst partial dentures help to fill the space left by lost or missing teeth.
The procedure is more cost effective than alternative cosmetic treatments and extra teeth can be added in the future. They are also easy to clean and repair.
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder tends to occur when there is an underlying problem with the jaw, jaw joint or surrounding muscles. The pain can be severe and may last for many years.
TMJ disorder can stem from a number of situations from stress or a heavy blow to excessively grinding teeth, and tends to affect women between 20-40 years old more than men. After an initial appointment to assess the best course of treatment, the problem can be successfully treated either surgically or non-surgically.
Children of all ages are more than welcome at Yorkshire Dental Suite. We believe in the importance of oral care from an early age and we will monitor the progress of your child’s teeth as they grow.
We teach children the good habits needed to develop and keep a healthy smile, as well as detecting and treating any problems before they develop. We advise regular visits to the dentist for check-ups.
Most patients develop their dental phobia due to a previous “bad experience” with a dentist. For these patient’s intravenous sedation is one of the best options to allow the dentist to carry out treatment.
Our sedation dentists are highly trained and competent with many years of experience treating patients under sedation. They have also undertaken more advanced training and hold a diploma in dental sedation.
We understand that a visit to the dentist can be a very difficult experience for some. Our sympathetic team provide a caring and supportive approach to put anxious patients at ease and make the visit as relaxing and positive as possible.
We care about the wellbeing of every patient and we listen carefully to any concerns they may have. The practice has a calm, friendly atmosphere and all our staff are fully trained to look after all patient needs.
